Not only can not looking after our teeth lead to issues such as gum disease and tooth decay, but it can also have a negative effect on our overall health. Looking after ‘baby teeth’ is just as important as looking after adult teeth. Those first little teeth do more than you think! They help your child learn to talk, chew healthy foods, and even guide adult teeth into the right place. Caring for baby teeth sets up a lifetime of healthy habits.
Whether it's brushing their first tooth, developing a teeth cleaning routine, or the first trip to the dentist, there are plenty of ways you can support your child to keep their teeth healthy and their smile bright!

The Keep Suffolk Smiling Project is commissioned by Public Health Suffolk and has been running since January 1995. Alongside a number of partner organisations, Public Health Suffolk have been working hard for the last 30 years with the aim to improve oral health outcomes and reduce health inequalities for children in our county.
Tooth decay remains one of the most common childhood diseases in the UK and is a leading cause of hospital admissions among children. Yet, it is largely preventable.
‘Keep Suffolk Smiling’ started with Health Visitors delivering key information and support to parents during their baby’s 8–12-month assessment for new births. During these checks, Health Visitors would provide parents with a dental health pack containing a toothbrush, toothpaste, brushing chart and health promotion leaflets. By providing support as early as a child’s first birthday, we aim to give families the information they need to be able to help take care of their children’s teeth from the very start.
Since the project started, a lot of work has gone into not only improving the support that is offered but also extending the reach of support to be able to benefit more children than ever before.
As well as the offer at the 8-12-month assessment, there is now also a similar offer in place for a child’s 2-year check where dental health packs and health promotion information is provided. Beyond that we have created a number of resources to benefit other groups such as school aged children and teenagers in order to support positive oral health messaging throughout childhood and make sure relevant information is included at each key stage.
