Annual Public Health Report 2025

The focus of the 2025 report is Youth Social Action: empowering young people to shape a better future

In April 2025, Suffolk County Council signed the Power of Youth Charter. This means we are part of a national UK movement that supports young people to have a stronger voice and play an active role in shaping their future, their communities and society as a whole. The Charter is linked to the #iWill movement, which is backed by ambassadors and champions across the country. In Suffolk, this work is supported by local charities, including Volunteering Matters, who we have worked with to produce this year’s report.

The report is based on the belief that when young people are supported to take part in social action, it brings real benefits. These include improved wellbeing, stronger communities and better public health. By sharing examples of projects led by young people, the report shows how their ideas, energy and commitment are helping to create healthier and more connected communities across Suffolk.

Why youth social action is important

Youth social action plays an important role in supporting public health by helping to build the skills, confidence and connections that contribute to wellbeing. View the presentation slide deck for more information about how good health is influenced not only by access to services, but also by how supported, involved and connected people feel within their communities.

Public health hackathons

Three local hackathon events, led by young people to identify key areas of focus which would make a difference locally, were an integral part of the report.

Coordinated by Volunteering Matters, these events are at the heart of Youth Social Action in practice.

The Annual Public Health Report

Young people were involved at every stage of creating the annual public health report. It shows our main public health priorities, including mental health, access to meaningful work, equality, young people’s wellbeing and strong community connections.

Inspiring youth social action in Suffolk

This report was put together in partnership with Volunteering Matters in Suffolk. It  follows the principles of the #iWill Power of Youth Charter by promoting participation, shared decision making and working across generations.
